    Certificate of Occupancy

    The process by which a certificate of occupancy (CO) is generated begins with either the Lee County Department of Community Development and/or The Town of Fort Myers Beach. A fire inspection is required to complete to process of obtaining the CO.

    Fire Inspections

    New Construction
    All fire inspections related to any commercial construction project in new or existing structures within the district are handled by the Fire Prevention Bureau, in coordination with all other appropriate Lee County and/or Town of Forth Myers Beach departments

    Existing Structures
    All existing buisness occupancies in the district should have an annual inspection for the purpose of maintaining a Certificate of Occupancy Permit. These occupancies include but are not limited to:

    • hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other medical centers
    • schools, daycare facilities and other recreational or educational centers
    • apartment and condominium buildings
    • industrial and manufacturing facilities
    • retail stores, business offices, dining and entertainment establishments

    Fire Investigations

    Responsible for determining the cause and origin of fires, and training new fire officers in fire investigation policies & procedures. Investigators are also responsible for the permitting, inspection and enforcement of retail sparkler and fireworks sales and displays within the district.
